Shane and I planned
for Baby Scarlett to arrive at noon September 24th. I decided that I felt most comfortable having
a scheduled c section with Scarlett for many reasons-Shane felt it was
completely my decision-“It’s your body it’s your decision” he would always tell
me when I asked for his input.
We found out that at 36 ½ weeks she was
weighing approximately 6 lbs 11 ounces…frightening when you know you still have
3 more weeks to go (and babies start gaining ½ a pound a week), my doctor was
going to be out of town on my due date for a robotics training, and why deny it-I’m obsessive
compulsive about how I like things done and when.
So we were scheduled
to arrive at the hospital by 10 am for check in, IV, epidural, OR prep, and so
forth…I am thankful Shane’s cousin called the day before and told me to drink
tons of water that day so my veins would be easy to find- lucky me, they were!
I don’t do needles well, haven’t for the last nine months!
So while Shane and I
waited-me being pumped full of fluids before the procedure, we had to entertain
ourselves…because my doctor ran over an hour late. The nurses said she’s “a super sweet doctor,
just not good about being on time”…therefore when my doctor made it to the parking
lot they walked us down to the OR.
I was amazed they let
Shane stay in the OR while they gave me the epidural-All of our friends told us their husbands were not allowed in the room. I think it kept me calm
and very much distracted. I’ve heard
horror stories of girls passing gas after getting the epidural…and truly doing
that in front of my husband was more frightening than the needle!
Shane did not get to
cut the cord but they did hold her over the sheet for us to see her! I was in
love-I thought Shane was questioning if she was his because she was so blue she
looked like a dark skinned baby! It was so amazing to hear her cry! There is
just no other feeling like it.
Indescribable.
Shane wanted to sit
with me while they got her ready…and he made the bad call of looking over the
sheet and saw interior parts he probably did not intend to see. The nurses took tons of pictures for him
though while he caught his breath!
Finally when they were finished with all of their checks, they brought
her over for him to hold while they prepared me for recovery.
She kept trying to
open her eyes the entire time even with how bright the room was and stopped
crying once she was put in Daddy’s arms.
